No, I was not reaped for the Hunger Games (Though I do have a perfect strategy for what I would do if I was.) I am a member of the YMCA’s Youth and Government program, where basically teenagers write up bills, lobby on them, and reenact government in the actual State Capitol. Throughout the year, students meet at their YMCA branches and discuss which role in government they want to play. There is Legislative, who create bills, Judicial, Press, Lobbyist – whatever you can think of, it’s there.
I was a lobbyist, and in fact I was nominated for Best Lobbyist in two chambers of the three Legislative branch. It was an enormous honor to be able to participate!
We stayed in The Desmond, an amazingly beautiful high-class hotel. The Courtyards are styled like a Colonial village, and the rooms all have a 18th century feel to them. Overall, it looked like the set of a movie.
The room that I stayed in, along with three other girls, had a great view of King’s Street, the smaller courtyard. In the hall next to my room, there was a print of a portrait depicting Alexander Hamilton. As a massive Hamilton fan, I was so excited to see this. Naturally I got pictures!
In the Capitol, there was a painting of the General – er, George Washington. My kindle takes terrible pictures, but I will upload them anyway.
Across from him there was a picture of an old, heavy man who turned out to be – Lafayette.
All in all, it was a great trip, and I’m glad my fandom worked it’s way into place, just like it always does. I was put in the right spot. 😉
